Cook’s Grist Mill, located in Alamance County, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back to the 1700s. Originally one of 41 grist mills in the county, it is now one of only two remaining. The mill was bought by Jason Queen as a gift for his wife, with plans to turn it into a weekend getaway spot. However, upon discovering its historic value, the couple decided to restore it and use it as the foundation for a new venture: Cook’s Mill Bourbon Whiskey.
The restoration of the mill has been a significant project. The mill’s original equipment, such as hand sifters and corn bags, were found intact, suggesting it was left in working condition. This discovery inspired the Queens to produce bourbon whiskey, utilizing locally sourced North Carolina heirloom corn. The whiskey is crafted in small batches and aged in new white oak barrels, highlighting the region’s agricultural heritage and traditional distillation methods (The Southern Blueprint) (Preservation NC).
Proceeds from the whiskey sales help fund the ongoing restoration and preservation of the mill, ensuring that its historical significance is maintained. Cook’s Mill Bourbon has gained recognition, including awards at the Heartland Whiskey Competition and the CHILLED Tasting Competition in 2023.
